Homeland is a neighborhood located in the northern part of Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is bounded roughly by Melrose Avenue on the north, Belona Avenue on the east, Homewood Avenue on the south, and Charles Street on the west.

History

The first instance in the Baltimore history of Homeland can be traced to a tract of land called "Job's Addition" surveyed by Job Evans in 1695. Further land was added in 1778. David Maulden Perine purchased the original property and added to it, so that by 1875 it reached its present size. One of the original planned communities in the U.S., Homeland was developed by the Roland Park Homeland Company which purchased the convert|391|acre|km2|sing=on parcel, then known as the Perine Estate of Homeland, in 1924 for the sum of $1,000,000. Homeland was laid out by the Boston firm of the Olmstead Brothers, who had also designed New York's Central Park.The advantages of the location of the property included the fact that its highest point sat more than convert|400|ft|m above sea level, thus making it one of the more elevated sections of Baltimore. The rolling terrain evoked the English flavor the Company wished to portray. The new development of Homeland was advertised in the Sunday Sun in 1924, with the sale opening at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, 11th October 1924. At the end of the first day, 89 lots had been sold. At the termination of the sale 16 days later, the number rose to 248. The first house approved by the Company was in 1924, built in 1925 - 5108 Springlake Way. In 2001, Homeland was entered into the National Register of Historic Places.

Demographics

97.8% of the houses in Homeland are occupied and 88.5% of that number are owner occupied. According to the last census, 88% of the residents are white, 8.6% are black, 1.8% asian and 1.5% are hispanic. 20% of the white residents are reported as Irish, another 20% English, 17% German and 10% Polish. The median family income is $136,383 with 1.2% of those in the workforce unemployed. 90.7% are high school graduates and 41% report having a graduate or professional degree.
