Sadist is a progressive death metal band from Genoa, Italy founded in 1991. The band split up in 2000 after releasing their "Lego" album and later reunited in 2005 and released their self-titled album in 2007. Their compositions involve a heavy usage of guitar solos and keyboard solos, with progressive, jazz and some Eastern influences. Although Sadist are a death metal outfit, the album "Lego" is a nu metal album with a thrash metal background.

History

Sadist was formed in 1991 when Tommy (guitars, keyboards) and Peso (drums) started auditioning for musicians to complete their lineup. In a few weeks after the auditions, Andy (bass) and Fabio (vocals) joined to complete the lineup for Sadist. While playing locally with original content from their demo, they caught the attention of the indie label Obscure Plasma Records and released "Black Screams" EP in September 1991 which was originally their demo and sold 2500 copies worldwide. [http://www.sadistribe.com/bio.htm Official Sadist Website] ] The EP was later released in 1992 under American indie label Wild Rag Records in a three-track version. The band then toured around Italy and France until Fabio left the band and forced Andy to play bass and provide vocals in the meantime.

Shortly afterwards, the band then goes to Portugal to play in Lisbon and were well received by both the audience and local media. With the successful shows, the band then attains a record deal with Nosferatu Records for a two-album contract and releases; "Above the Light" in 1993 which received great reviews by the press. The band undergoes a lineup change when Andy leaves the band, then being replaced by bassist Chicco and the addition of a new vocalist Zanna. In late 1993, the band records a video for the song "Sometimes They Come Back" from the "Above the Light" album and start to tour successfully in France and the Netherlands.

In early 1994, Sadist support Carcass during the Italian shows for their "Heartwork" tour and a few months later while in France they supported Samael as well. While on tour, the band worked on some songs for the new album as well and in May 1995 entered Rhythm Studios in Bidford on Avon, England and started recording their second album. In June of that year, the recording halted because the band had several important headlining shows for a festival in their home country as well as Belgium. When the shows were over, the band returned to England to finish the mixing portion of the album and released their second album "Tribe" in February 1996 being distributed by Sun Rising Records for Europe and Toy's Factory for Japan. The album receives even higher review ratings than their previous album and is said to be their most technical release yet. The band then toured again to promote the new album in France, Italy and the Netherlands and continued to tour until June and soon released their second video, "Tribe", which was broadcasted on many European musical television channels such as; MTV, VIVA, TMC2, TMF and many others.

In November, Sadist headlines Mindviews Belgian Metal Convention which was a successful show and received great reactions by the audience and Belgian metal scene in general. Later that year, the band are featured on the Japanese Iron Maiden tribute with their version of "Wrathchild", which gained highly favorable reviews. At the end of 1996, the band undergoes another lineup change when drummer Peso leaves to work on an old side-project and is replaced by Oinos. Then another lineup change undergoes, this time the original lineup is made when vocalist Zanna and bass player Chicco are replaced by the new vocalist Trevor and bass player Andy.

In early 1997, the band goes on tour again around Italy and The Netherlands and later starts recording sessions for the next album, but before the album was released Oinos leaves the band being replaced by Alessio. At the end of 1997, Sadist signs with label Displeased Records and returns with a brutally faster paced album, "Crust", that same year. The album is also distributed successfully in Japan featuring classic covers of pop hits from the 80's like "Take on Me" by A-ha and "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. In 1998, the band released their third music video "'Fools' and Dolts" which was broadcasted on major European music television channels. Shortly afterwards, the band travels to Germany to play at the biggest European festival, the Wacken Open Air and their appearance there makes them the first Italian metal band to play at Wacken. The band finishes off the year with a small tour of France and Portugal.

In 1999, the band signs to new label Impact/System Shock and produced the new album "Lego" by themselves at Nadir Recording and Mastering. The response to the album this time wasn't as great as their other releases and something goes wrong with the band's general mood and they decide to end their activities as Sadist for a while and go on hiatus. In 2005, the band is reunited and signs with Italian indie label, Beyond Productions and re-release "Above the Light" and "Tribe" both remastered at Nadir Recording and Mastering.

In late 2006, the band starts the recording sessions for the new album and includes guest musicians like Claudio Simonetti and Dado Sezzi. The album was released in April 2007 and their fourth video for "Tearing Away" was made and then followed by touring and festivals like; Iron Maiden, Gods of Metal, Metal Camp and U.F.T.G.. The band is also planning to go on a club tour at the end of the summer. On September 26 and 28, 2008, Sadist headlined two Armenian festivals, " [http://zhesht.am/highlandmetalfest/info.html/ Highland Metalfest] " and "Rock the Borders" [http://www.zhesht.am/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1] .
