.

Plotline

Moshi! Moshi!, in Japanese, is the typical greeting when you pick up your phone. The producers of Moshi! Moshi! hoped to achieve a cheerful, open sort of feel by making this the title of the TV drama. However, Moshi! Moshi! is not just cheerful; it combines elements of romance, severe depression, and amnesia, as well as the underlying current of death. The plotline is as follows:

Prior to the first story arc

Koneko Nujihara is orphaned when her father, whom she lived with in Switzerland, commits suicide. Her grandfather, her sole relative, sends for her to come to Japan. The young girl does, but catches the wrong flight and finds herself somewhere completely different. A young boy, who remains nameless, assists the frightened girl to catch the right flight. In return, as thanks, she gives him her cat-charm bracelet, which he promises to return when he next sees her.

This young boy becomes the main love-interest of Koneko, our protagonist, despite the fact she does not see him 'ever again'.

First Story Arc: 'Kyoto's Secrets'

Koneko Nujihara has plans to transfer to a prestigious junior-high school, Agarisaki High. She is leaving her grandfather's precocious shrines behind. After being approved, she sneaks over for a preview of her new school, only to be stunned; it houses a group of delinquents, who laugh at her miko clothes, and threaten to rape her. One of the delinquents protects her and warns her not to trust anyone, and when she laughs at his words, the disgruntled 'thug' leaves. Koneko takes note of the long, thin scar that stretches up the delinquents arm, and briefly wonders what has happened.

Koneko's arrival at the school as a special-honor student is booed and she is shunned. Her strange name, and her habit of adding the word '~nya' onto the end of each student apparently marks her out as a 'freak'. A few days into the new school year, the handsome student president greets her with much enthusiam, but feeling that he is playing a cruel joke on her, Koneko runs away. The president, Kazuya Noguri, keeps pace with her, attempting to call her back. Halfway through the chase, however, someone attacks Kazuya quite forcefully. That someone turns out to be a childish-looking classmate of Koneko's, named Shiori Maekawa.

Shiori ('Shii-chan') and Kazuya ('Noguri-kaichou') manage to convince Koneko into staying. The next day, slightly more heartened by Kazuya and Shiori's presence, Koneko spots the delinquent who saved her, strangely dressed in uniform. It turns out that he is the other special honour student, Shiki Sakahachi, one of her seniors. Because of his high family status, Shiki is one of the most powerful and influential students in the entire school, but Koneko ignores the subtle warning. When she attempts to greet him, however, he ignores her. Shiori and Kazuya explain to a stunned Koneko that Shiki must keep his title by not mingling with anyone below his class.

Koneko forcibly blurts out that he is a delinquent, and the whole hall goes quiet. Shiki talks to her for the first time, telling her that he is demoting her to only an 'honor student', and she must watch her mouth in case she would like to be expelled. For several episodes, Koneko rants about this and forms stronger bonds with Kazuya and Shiori (especially Shiori, seeing as Kazuya has many duties), and attempts to win back her special honor student status in various, amusing ways.

Her final attempt, as advised by Kazuya, is to join the volleyball team. All sports play together. Shiki Sakahachi is the captain of the tennis team (his vice-captain is Ichiru). Shiki is visibly amazed to see Koneko playing volleyball. Freed of her second-hand uniform, it is quite obvious that Koneko is a young Japanese beauty. Her white skin, slight frame, big eyes and shapely figure catch everyone's attention quite well. (Ichiru even drops his racket). However, she is far from a perfect sportswoman - she sucks at volleyball.

embedded arc: jealousy storm

The vice-captain of her volleyball team, Kanako Akisuzi, amazed by her physique, is obviously jealous of the attention Koneko gets the next day at school. Determined to put an end to the 'annoying little kitten', once and for all, she attempts various painful schemes; ripping Koneko's books apart, stealing her clothes so that Koneko has to run in her underwear, placing nasty notes in her locker, and sticking pins to her clothes.

Kanako also forms a mini Kazuya fan-club (whom she also has a crush on), so that the president can't come to Koneko's aid, and gets Shiori out of the way by sending her off to France, where she thinks her mom is dying. Once again, Koneko feels somewhat alone without any friends, and Shiki is still ignoring her. However, the captain of her volleyball team (and another classmate), Asuka Chioki, and the vice-captain of the tennis team and Koneko's classmate, Ichiru Kazabuki, see this.

Ichiru approaches Koneko and quickly earns her trust and friendship. In several scenes, Shiki is seen talking to Ichiru. He asks about Koneko, and it is obvious that he is quite curious about the little cat-girl. Ichiru remarks that he's surprised how well Koneko has held up, and Shiki replies 'Yeah. Despite all the tests we set for her, she seems to be holding up quite well'. Ichiru smiles at this, but no further snippets are revealed. Meanwhile, Koneko is around the corner, watching them talk. She leaves, feeling even more alone than before.

Asuka also becomes close friends with Koneko and Shiori (who has returned). After accidentally crashing into Koneko, and after Koneko helping her pick up all her grocery (and even offering to pay for the damage she had done), Asuka found Koneko's open-hearted goodness hard to resist. Shiori grows quite jealous of how well Koneko and Asuka get along, but after a small argument, they quickly resolve their differences and eat lunch together everyday.

After Asuka one day opens Koneko's locker, to find a 'Stay away, burriko neko~!' note attached with scalpel, she becomes extremely concerned and informs Ichiru of the situation. Ichiru too, becomes quite panicky, and tells Shiki what is happening. Shiki remains indifferent. Once again, Koneko overhears his disapproval of her. Nonetheless, with Asuka and Shiori, she trains even harder at volleyball.

A few days before the biggest volleyball match, Asuka steps Koneko up one rank. Kanako, seeing this, sees that her ploys aer failing. So she posts a hate campaign against Shiori, Asuka and Ichiru, with a post script: if that ugly kitty visits me on the roof at 5 am today, this'll all end'.

Koneko, frightened for her friends, does as Kanako commands. Kanako then proceeds to slap her and lower her spiritual energy. However, before she can get any further, Shiki, Ichiru and Kazuya appear, at the prompting of Shiori and Asuka. Shiki, in a moment of blazing glory, expels Kanako with his authority. Ichiru and Kazuya make sure that a shaking Koneko's alright, before Asuka transport Koneko back to the finals, whereas Ichiru and Shiori stay with Shiki. Shiori is then revealed to be Shiki's associate in the Academy, and he commands her to watch over Koneko, which the French girl agrees to do. Meanwhile, Asuka returns to Kanako ... with the message, 'Never lay eyes on my friends again'.

The end of this arc, and incidentally, the entire 'Kyoto's Secrets' arc ends with the sports finals episode. Koneko is still badly wounded, but nonetheless, she tries her best. At the third-last game, one of Shiki's delinquent pals comes upon her. Ichiru, who is watching from a distance, wonders briefly whether he should intervene, but Shiki shakes his head. Kazuya instead protects a badly frightened Koneko, and is wounded on the neck. Koneko, freaked out, then calls for Ichiru - and Ichiru comes.

A startled Shiki is left wondering about Ichiru's loyalty and why Koneko caled for Ichiru and not Shiki.
