USS Saturn (AK-49) was an "Saturn"-class
stores ship commissioned by theU.S. Navy for service inWorld War II . She was responsible for delivering general cargo and equipment to ships and stations in the war zone.Seizing a German freighter for U.S. Navy use
The German
freighter "SS Arauca", built in1939 byBremer Vulcan ,Vegesack ,Germany , attempting to return toGermany after having been forced to put in toVera Cruz, Mexico , by the outbreak of war inPoland in September1939 , reachedPort Everglades, Florida , on19 December 1939 , to avoid capture or destruction by the British light cruiser HMS "Orion". "Orion’s" firing across "Arauca’s" bow into American territorial waters prompted a protest to the British Foreign Office and the ship remained interned at Port Everglades. Eventually taken over by the U.S. government, the ship was acquired by the Navy on20 April 1942 , renamed "Saturn" and designated as a cargo ship, AK-49. "Saturn" was commissioned the same day atMobile, Alabama , Comdr. Charles M. Furlow in command.World War II North Atlantic operations
"Saturn" sailed from Mobile on
5 June toBoston, Massachusetts , stopping at other Atlantic Coast ports en route. On19 September , she left Boston on the first of three trips supplying American bases in Newfoundland with general cargo. In March1943 , she shifted to the run between east coast ports, principallyNorfolk, Virginia , andBaltimore, Maryland , and bases in theCaribbean such asGuantanamo andTrinidad , remaining there until September1944 except for one trip toEngland in October-November1943 . In April1944 , she was converted to a provision storeship at theNorfolk Navy Yard and was reclassified AF-40 on10 April 1944 . On2 September 1944 , "Saturn" sailed to theMediterranean carrying supplies for the invasion of southernFrance . After one trip toIceland and several voyages to the Caribbean, she made another trip toOran in March1945 .Post-war decommissioning
She then resumed her supply voyages up and down the Atlantic Coast until arriving at
Norfolk, Virginia , on1 July 1946 , where she was decommissioned on23 July . The ship was redelivered to theWar Shipping Administration on25 July and struck from theNavy list on15 August 1946 . She was laid up in theMaritime Commission Reserve Fleet in the James River, where she remained until sold to Mr. Isaac Varela ofCastellon de la Plana ,Spain , on12 September 1972 , for scrapping.Military awards and honors

battle star for herWorld War II service. Her crew was eligible for the following medals:
