Peñasblancas

Peñasblancas

Peñasblancas (lit: white cliffs) is a precipice located in the western face of the central range (cordillera central) of Colombian Andes. It can be seen clearly from the near cities of Armenia and Calarcá in the department of Quindío.

The bright white color of the rock walls is due to the presence of calcite and limestone. There is a large number of solutional caves and rock shelters in the inside of the cliff, but the access is very difficult. This location is believed by the local people to be the place of a legendary treasure hidden by a native leader, the Calarca Cacique during his fights against the colonialists.

The cliff is a landmark of the region, and guided visites to this place are offered. From the base of the rock can be seen beautiful landscapes, including views of Armenia, Calarca and the surrounding area.
