- Gould Belt Survey
The Gould Belt Survey is an astronomical research project led by the
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics , with the participation of several other institutions. [ [http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/gouldbelt/index.html Mission statement of the Gould Belt Survey team] ] [ [http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/gouldbelt/who_we_are.html Gould Belt Survey participants] ]The astronomers use observations and data captured by the
Spitzer Space Telescope and other telescopes to create a complete picture of the star forming regions within an approximately 1600lightyear radius centered on our Solar System. These regions are partly or completely clouded byinterstellar dust and therefore cannot be observed by telescopes using visible light, like the Hubble Space telescope. The
Gould Belt survey team uses a variety of telescopes and observatories to study multiple aspects of star formation. The Spitzer Space Telescope provides imagery and observations made in theinfrared spectrum , while for example theJames Clerk Maxwell Telescope provides images from the submillimeter wavelength region of the spectrum. The
Herschel Space Observatory telescope will provide observation data between the far infrared and the sub-millimeter wavelenghts, effectively covering wavelenghts between the observational capabilities of the Spitzer and the Maxwell telescopes.Observation results
The first observations by the Spitzer Space Telescope were completed between September 21-27, 2006. The first region that has been surveyed is IC5146 (the
Cocoon Nebula in Cygnus). The first details of the research were presented at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle. [ [http://www.aas.org/meetings/aas209/ AAS 209th meeting] ]Based on these observations, the team of astronomers led by Dr. Robert Gutermuth, of the
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics reported the discover ofSerpens south , a cluster of 50 young stars in theSerpens constellation. [ [http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/Media/happenings/20070808/ Stellar Siblings in Serpens South] ]The research team also released a [http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/gouldbelt/aas.pdf poster] which covers the details of the research and the results presented at the AAS meeting.
