lake located in theKawartha lakes region of south centralOntario ,Canada (coordinates coord|44|35|N|78|50|W|region:CA-ON_type:waterbody). It is 16 km long and averages 3 km wide. The Gull River empties into the lake.This lake is the highest point of the
Trent-Severn Waterway ; from here, the waterway descends toGeorgian Bay in the northwest, and toLake Ontario in the southeast. Some claim that Balsam Lake, at 256.3 m (841') abovesea level , is the highest point on Earth to which a boat can be navigated from sea level. However, navigable portions of the system formed by theMississippi River and its tributaries are at elevations of over 305 m (1,000') above sea level.The village of
Coboconk, Ontario is located on the north side of the lake.Balsam Lake Provincial Park is also located on the lake.
