Metro New York is a free daily newspaper in New York City started on May 5, 2004. Its main competition is AM New York, which practices many of the same distribution and marketing strategies. The daily is primarily distributed by workers paid to station themselves in areas with high pedestrian traffic, who offer the free paper to anyone who passes by. There are also similar Metro papers offered in various other American cities, such as Philadelphia and Boston which are run by the same publishing company.
That company, Swedish Metro International, is the world's leading publisher of free dailies, with 57 editions in 17 countries, including the largest-circulation papers in Paris and Rome.
