Andrew O'Shaughnessy (born 1984 in Kilmallock, County Limerick) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Kilmallock and with the Limerick senior inter-county team. In 2007, he was an All-Ireland all-star and best at his position (Full Forward).

Early & private life

Andrew O'Shaughnessy was born in Kilmallock, County Limerick in 1984. He was educated locally and later attended the famous St. Colman's College in Fermoy, County Cork. Here his hurling skills were first developed and he became a star on the college's various hurling teams. Here O'Shaughnessy enjoyed a very successful hurling career, winning three Dean Ryan Cup medals, three Harty Cup medals and two All-Ireland Colleges' medals. His coring exploits were even more spectacular. In the 2001 colleges' final against Gort CBS he scored 2-8 of a total score of 2-10. After completing a successful Leaving Certificate at the college O'Shaughnessy became a cadet in the Irish army.

Playing career

Club

O'Shaughnessy plays his club hurling with his local Kilmallock club and has enjoyed some success. He won a minor county title following a defeat of Na Piarsaigh. In that game itself Kilmallock had scored an impressive 4-10 after fifty minutes. What is even more impressive is the fact that it was O'Shaughnessy who scored it all. Although he later played in the 2005 county final O'Shaughnessy has yet to win a senior county title.

Inter-county

O'Shaughnessy first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Limerick minor hurling team in the eary 2000s. He had little success in this grade and later joined the county's under-21 team. Here he won a Munster title in 2002, before later claiming an All-Ireland title. It was Limerick's third under-21 triumph in-a-row.

In 2003 O'Shaughnessy made his senior championship debut in a Munster semi-final against Waterford. Limerick lost that game and continued their streak of bad luck that had lasted since 2001. The next few years proved difficult for both O'Shaughnessy and for Limerick. In spite of coming close to creating some hurling upsets, defeat seemed to be Limerick's lot. All this changed in 2007 when Limerick had one of their best seasons. Their campaign began with an epic three-game series with Tipperary. O'Shaughnessy turned out to be the hero in the second of these games as he scored the equalising point which meant that the sides had to play for a third time. He later lined out in his first senior Munster final against Waterford. Although Limerick lost on that occasion the team showed that they were not a pushover. Limerick later gained their revenge on Waterford by defeating them in the All-Ireland semi-final. This victory allowed O'Shaughnessy's side to play Kilkenny in the championship decider. Unfortunately, Limerick got off to a bad start with their goalkeeper, Brian Murray, letting in two goals in the first ten minutes. 'The Cats', however, went on to win the game by six points. In spite of this loss O'Shaughnessy finished the season as the championship's top scorer and he was later presented with his first All-Star award.

Provincial

O'Shaughnessy has also lined out with Munster in the Railway Cup inter-provincial competition, however, he has yet to win an inter-provincial title.
