Brian Murray (born 1985 in Patrickswell, County Limerick) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Patrickswell and with the Limerick senior inter-county team. He is the goalkeeper on both teams.

Playing career

Club

Murray plays his club hurling with his local Patrickswell club, however, he has yet to taste success at senior level. He played in goal when the club lost the senior county final in 2006. His father Terrance Murray refereed the 1987 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final between Galway and Kilkenny.

Inter-county

Murray first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Limerick senior inter-county team in 2006. That year he made his debut in the championship, however, Limerick's losing streak continued and they were defeated in their opening game against Tipperary. After moving through the qualifier system Murray's side later played Cork in the All-Ireland quarter-final. Although the team only lost by a point it was a game that Limerick could easily have won. In 2007 Limerick had an epic battle with Tipp in the provincial championship. After a second replay Murray's side emerged victorious and qualified to play Waterford in the Munster final. Although Limerick lost on that occasion the team showed that they were not a pushover. Limerick later gained their revenge on Waterford by defeating them in the All-Ireland semi-final. This victory allowed Murray's side to play Kilkenny in the championship decider. Unfortunately, Limerick got off to a bad start with Murray letting in two goals in the first ten minutes. 'The Cats', however, went on to win the game by six points. In spite of this loss Murray was later presented with his first All-Star award, marking him out as the best goalkeeper in the championship.

Provincial

Murray has also lined out with Munster in the Railway Cup inter-provincial competition. He captured a winners medal in this competition in 2007 as Munster defeated Connacht.
