2028 Summer Olympics

The 2028 Summer Olympics, which will be officially known as the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad, is an international athletic event that has yet to be organized by the International Olympic Committee. The winning bid should be announced between June and August of 2021.

In 2005, the Dutch sporting confederation NOC*NSF began considering a submission to bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic games in the capital of the Netherlands. A joint bid for Vancouver and Seattle to host the 2028 Summer Olympics is being explored. Unless a proposed Montreal/Lake Placid bid occurs for the 2022 Winter Olympics this would be the first multi-national bid submitted and if Montreal/Lake Placid is not chosen would also be the first time that a city will have hosted both a Summer and a Winter Games since Vancouver will host the 2010 Winter Olympics. A multi-national bid would be a ground breaking event in the Olympic movement and would require overcoming numerous logistical hurdles and a change in an International Olympic Committee rule requiring that the Olympics be awarded to a single city. This rule has often not been enforced, with cities bidding and winning Olympics where some of the events are held away from the host city. For example, in the 2008 Games hosted in Beijing, equestrian events were actually held in Hong Kong, 1,200 miles south of Beijing; [http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,5143,700247456,00.html] and in the 2010 games to be hosted in Vancouver, numerous events will be hosted by Whistler, British Columbia, a town approximately 100 km away. Vancouver and Seattle both believe that the logistics can be overcome and have cited that the travel time between Seattle and Vancouver is similar to the travel time between Whistler, British Columbia and Vancouver, the site of most of the 2010 Winter Olympics competitions. Brisbane has been pre-selected by the Australian Olympic Committee as the next most likely Australian bid city. Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman also stated that infrastructure to support an Olympic Games could be in place for a bid within 15 to 20 years. Trademark controversy

Anticipating bids for the Summer Olympics by Paris, France, in 2005 a Parisian, Mr Gilbert L., registered the trademarks of "Paris 2016", "Paris 2020", "Paris 2024" and "Paris 2028" and associated internet domain names. On March 14, 2007 the High Court of First Instance of Paris (Tribunal d'instance of Paris) ruled that the registration of the domain names was fraudulent and annulled the trademarks.
