Natter was born April 9, 1945 at his home in
Trussville, Alabama . He enlisted in theUnited States Naval Reserve at the age of 17 as a Seaman Recruit. After one year of enlisted service he was appointed to theUnited States Naval Academy , and graduated in 1967, receiving a commission an Ensign. Silver Star ,Navy Distinguished Service Medal (3 awards),Defense Superior Service Medal ,Legion of Merit (five awards), Bronze Star with Combat V,Purple Heart , Meritorious Service Medal (two awards),Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V,Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V, and various unit and campaign awards. Other honors include in 1998 theOrder of the Rising Sun from the Emperor of Japan, the 1998Order of National Security Medal from the Republic of Korea, the 2003Ellis Island Medal of Honor , the 2003 Ted Williams Military Achievement Award, and the 2004Naval Order of the United States Distinguished Sea Service Award.
