Caryville Cross

The Caryville Cross, located off Exit 141 on I-75 in Campbell County, Tennessee, is one of several massive crosses erected by Oneida resident James Potter. There are a few others he has put up by the interstate, such as the one in Loudon county off I-75 and one in Anderson County. Unlike the other crosses, the Caryville Cross is a subject of irony and humor. The reason for this is that right next to this cross is Adult World, an XXX store.

One might ask which came first? Technically, Adult World was built there first. However, Potter says he was planning to put a cross in Campbell County before the store was built. Then, once Adult World was finished, Potter said that strengthened his resolve to have the massive, 104-foot cross built there, saying: "You have to be pretty brave to go by that cross and go down there and ignore it, if you know anything about it."

This area is the subject of many obvious jokes, such as calling the area "Porn Mecca."

It is estimated that 22 million motorists a year drive by this cross.
