The first considerations to the building of flood protection walls became after devastating floods at the beginning 20. Century calm. One planned several concrete dams in the supplies of the Bode. First planning referred to an individual concrete dam, which one would have had to sacrifice however several localities. The actual project was finished 1938 and did without the flooding of localities, but several concrete dams were planned. With the construction work at the Rappbode dam 1938 could be begun. 1942 was already adjusted the construction measures for war reasons. In the GDR the project was again taken up and extended by drinking water treatment. The original plant planning remained. The technology was adapted. The accumulated water is above all a drinking water reserve, to which those can fall back east the resin of convenient cities. The pressure pipes go to ashtray lives, half, Berne castle, resounds (Saale) and even Leipzig. The water quality is expressed good thereby, the water hardness lies on the average with 3° of German hardness. Thus the water is ideal for the employment in steam generation and washing plants. The artificial lake contributes also in small measure to the power generation.
