- CIGAR (aviation)
CIGAR or CIGARS is a
mnemonic that refers to a pre-takeoff checklist performed bygeneral aviation pilots. The mnemonic stands for:*Controls: Check for free and correct movement of control surfaces with full deflections.
*Instruments: Check instruments for proper operation, indication, and setting.
*Gas: Check to insure proper fuel supply; this will include fuel shutoff valve, mixture, fuel selector switch, and electric fuel pump, if so equipped.
*Airplane: A general check of the airplane and occupants, ie seatbelts on, door closed and locked, everything secure (no pens etc loose), seats upright and locked in place (those that slide back and forth or tilt). Trim tabs can be checked here, but they should always be checked and adjusted in the pre-takeoff checklist.
*Run-up: Perform the engine run-up check; this will include checking magnetos, engine instrument indications, and carburetor heat, if so equipped.Alternately:
*Controls: as above.
*Instruments: as above.
*Gas: as above.
*Attitude: aircraft trimmed for takeoff.
*Run-up: as above.
*Safety: Seat-belts secure for pilot and passengers; doors and windows secure; transponder set to "Altimeter" and squawking 1200; check pattern for possible on final approach.Yet another version was used by the U.S. Air Force:
CIGarettes For The Poor Russian Soldiers: Controls, Instruments, Gas, Flaps, Trim, Prop, Radios, Straps.
