Prince Karl Theodor of Bavaria

Prince Karl Theodor of Bavaria

Prince Karl Theodor of Bavaria ( _de. Karl Theodor Maximilian August von Bayern) (born Munich, July 7, 1795; died Tegernsee, August 16, 1875) was a member of the Wittelsbach dynasty. He was the second son and fifth child of Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria (1756-1825) and Augusta Wilhelmine of Hesse-Darmstadt (1765-96).

Prince Karl joined the Bavarian Army and rose to be Field Marshal in 1841. At the age of 71, he commanded the Bavarian forces in the Austro-Prussian War with General Ludwig von der Tann. It was not a success, as troops under their command often found themselves in the wrong location, or were slaughtered by the Prussians. In one incident, the German Confederation Union Army 7th Corps received orders to join up with the retreating Hanoverian army at Hersfeld. Prince Karl did not know his allies' location and simply waited, until it was too late.

Prince Karl also resided in the Prinz-Carl-Palais in Munich.

Prince Karl married twice, both times morganatically:

* On October 1, 1823 - Marie Anna Sophie de Pétin (1796-1838) (created (1823) Baroness von Bayrstorff). They had three children :
**Caroline Sophie, (1816-89)
**Maximiliane Theodore, (1823-85)
**Franziska Sophie, (1827-1912)

* On May 7, 1859 - Henriette Schoeller (1815-66). There were no children from this marriage.
