She was eliminated from the "piano round" and thus lost her chance to enter the Top 13 on Indian Idol 3. However, the judges granted her a spot in the final "Gala Rounds" via a Wildcard Entry. She has garnered much fame thanks to her firecracker performances since then, and her singing has vastly improved despite the comments of many of her own skeptical co-contestants whom she was largely unaffected by. She thrives on audience response and the judges too have been extremely supportive of her performances.
Many argue that because she focuses on her performance, her singing is greatly affected.she is considered as the face of the woman of new emerging India.Day One: Piano Round
Mishra performed "Aaye Re Khushi", dressed up like a tomboy and singing a song about a traditionally feminine character, who likes to be adorned with "Choorian" and "Payal". Mishra's performance got her great reviews. Alisha Chinai asked her why she is so good, and asked about how Mishra's a tomboy singing about a girly girl, asking "You got it all", to which Mishra replied yes. Javed Akhtar commented that if there was some way he could give a 110% rating, he would have. Udit Narayan stood up for her and said that he was so taken with her performance that he felt like dancing with her. Mishra subsequently requested Narayan to come on stage and dance with her. Afterwards, Narayan also performed the reworked "Paan Banaras Wala" from the Bollywood movie, "Don".
Day Two: Piano Round
Mishra performed "Ajnabee", this time highlighting her performance by using a revolving stool to depict the beginning and ending of her performance. Javed Akhtar said that she performed and sang really well, and being the last judge who hasn't danced with Ankita yet, he should have joined her but he cheated a little. Udit Narayan said that the reason Akhtar didn't join her on stage was because he had even higher expectations from her, and if she delivers another performance of the same calibre, he would definitely join her. Alisha Chinai said that while the performance was mindblowing, Mishra was so engrossed in it that she wasn't able to maintain her pitch and key. Mishra landed in the bottom 4, but was saved by the public. Aisha Syed, Vanita, and Priyanka were eliminated.
Day Three: Piano Round
Mishra performed the title track of "Golmaal", and once again she was back to her signature tomboy attire. Alisha Chinai reminded her that while her performance once again was really good, it took away from her singing which was a little flat. Udit Narayan mentioned that Mishra came onstage without her usual spirit and energy and that he hoped that this lack of energy wans't because of a comment he had made after her performance in the first week. He said that she should bring her energy back because she has the style, the personality, the edge that she can really deliver Earth shattering performances, and while she was offkey, he still would like to see her in the Top 10. Javed Ahtar said that he loved Mishra's performance, and that her authenticity and passion for music shone through, even though Chinai's point was valid that Mishra did go flat in places. The host, Mini Mathur, defended Mishra by saying that the judges should give her due credit for bringing her unique edge to the competition, Javed Akhtar agreed and went on to dedicate a verse to Ankita, which talked about someone who like to assert their uniqueness by treading paths that aren't commonly chosen. Udit Narayan got a little emotional after Akhtar's declaration, and once again said that Mishra should bring her energy back because the judges have a lot of hope and expectations from her.
Day Four: Piano Round
Mishra performed "Aisa Koi Dilwala Re", getting good reviews all around. Though once again, Chinai mentioned that her singing was a little offkey. Mishra was subsequently eliminated the next day.
Wildcard: Round of 7
Mishra was selected as the last contestant to be called for the Wildcard Round. She performed an Original Bhajan by her Guru called "Tu Vishaal Hai". Mini Mathur commented on Ankita's ability to shock people with her appearance and song selection with her chameleon like nature going from "Ankit" to "Ankita" to "Ankiteshvari" in a jiff. Alisha Chinai said that she's convinced that Mishra really meant business when she said earlier that she wanted to leave her mark on the show, because not only had she managed to shock people, she went out of her comfort zone and still sang beautifully. Javed Akhtar compared her shifting appearances to the characters of twin sisters Sita and Gita from the Bollywood movie "Sita Gita", and complimented her for singing beautifully and having a voice that had the right amount of vulnerability and modesty that enhances the rendering of a Bhajan. Udit Narayan said that it was obvious that she had worked very hard and if she continues like this, she will go far, to which Akhtar said that he didn't want Mishra to go far but to stay right in front of them performing brilliantly.
Wildcard: Round of 4
Mishra was one of four contestants selected by the public and brought into the 2nd Wilcard Round. She sang "Kaisi Paheli Zindagani". At this point, Anu Malek was also back from an ailment-related absence, and joining the judging panel once again. Mishra chose to stand still this time, choosing to emote the song with her eyes, which were appropriately enhanced with make-up. Alisha Chinai commented that Ankita was fabulous in creating the right mood of the song, and that she had delivered a mindblower. Udit Narayan commented that singing and emoting that well at the same time is very difficult and Mishra has delivered flawlessly in both areas for the second consecutive time. Anu Malik said that this was one of Mishra's majorly finest performances ever and that as far as he was concerned, the public should pick her there and then. Javed Akhtar said that he wasn't thinking about Mishra, but about who the second contestant will be from the other 3 to make it to the Finals as Mishra was already in the finals as far as he was concerned.
Week One: Galas
Mishra performed "Akhiyaan Na Maar". The performance was followed by chants of "Once More" by the audience and the judges were very positive. Javed Akhtar said that she has hit it outta the park, Udit Narayan said that he has revised expectations from Mishra and set them at a higher level, Alisha Chinai said that Mishra is a deadly combination of singing and performance, and Anu Malek said that he was happy that after much deliberation, they had unanimously decided to bring Mishra back, and that he had previously observed that all the girls were scared of the possibility of Mishra returning, and that she had not only returned, she had conquered. At the end of the show, when asked about their individual favorites for the evening, Javed Akhtar mentioned Mishra, and she was also the only girl mentioned by the judges.
Week Two: Galas
The theme was to pick a song that represents you best, and Mishra picked "Rangeela Re", which has a performer dancing in a supermarket, wishing that she becomes popular and imagining her life to be fulfilled once she becomes a "face" among faces. Her performance was sensational. Javed Akhtar mentioned that he was glad the judges selected her and that they couldn't have picked a better contestant. Alisha Chinai said that the song wasn't perfectly within her key or range but the performance made up for that. Udit Narayan said that there was fire in her performance, it was earth shattering and if Mishra focused on Vocals a little more, she can win Indian Idol. Anu Malek also said that she was outstanding and that he loved her professionalism in how she recovered from a prop mishap, said her performance was gutsy and had quite possibly the greatest beginning ever to any Indian Idol performance.
Week 3: Galas
The theme of the week was to pick a song that was picturised on the contestant's favorite actor or actress and Mishra performed "Chamma Chamma", which was picturised on her favorite actress, Urmila Matondkar. The performance was another sensational one and placed Mishra in the Top 3 with Amit Paul and Deepali. Anu Malek said that they are looking for the ideal combination of singing and performance and Ankita brings that package to Indian Idol. Alisha Chinai gave her a 100% on Performance, and 99.9% on Vocals. Udit Narayan said that she started off completely off-key but recovered and then delivered another earth shattering performance. The guest judge Shabana Azmi, who was filling in for an absent Javed Akhtar, said that Mishra was superb, and she was astounded by high well Mishra was able to perform even with the difficulty level of the song.
Week 4: Galas
The theme was to do a Medley of a fast song and a slow song. Mishra's song choice was different as she was the only one who chose songs that felt connected to each other. She chose "Babuji Dheere Chalna" as her slow track and "Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo" as her fast track. Her performance was unanimously lauded. Javed Akhtar gave her a 10 on 10. Alisha Chinai gave her a 100% on Singing and a 100% on Performance. Udit Narayan said that she was once again Earth shattering, Anu Malek compared her performance to the arrival of a star from among the celestial bodies, and the guest judge Govinda said that she has a unique spirit that will get her far in the competition. Afterwards, Javed Akhtar asked Govinda to dance with Ankita, and he agreed. What followed was one of the greatest moments on Indian Idol, as Govinda, who's on a comeback trail, revived some of his old Performance magic to Ankita's tunes. Later on after Amit Paul performed, Anu Malek mentioned that the two sensational performances of the evening belonged to contestants who had come back through the Wildcard round, and it is because they know how it feels to have been eliminated before that they work so hard and deliver week in and week out.
Week 5: Galas
The theme of Week 5 was Romance and Mishra ventured out of her comfort zone and chose "Suraj Hu Madham", an immensely difficult song. Alisha Chinai said that her notes seemed hollow and that Romance isn's her forte. Udit Narayan also mentioned that this isn't the way she's expected to sing on Indian Idol. Javed Akhtar, however, said that he was worried for Mishra because she had chosen such a difficult song but she rendered it beautifully and he would be elated if she wins the competition. Anu Malek also said that Mishra was outstanding, inspiring a debate with Alisha Chinai about Mishra's suitability to the Romance genre.
Week 6: Galas
The theme of Week 6 was Folk Music. Mishra chose "UP Bihar Lootne". Alisha Chinai complimented her and said that all her past mistakes were forgotten because her performance was mindblowing. Udit Narayan said that her performance was fantastic but her singing was mediocre. Javed Akhtar said that while she didn't exactly emote well she was still exceptional, and Anu Malek told her that while she was outstanding, she needed to concentrate on her vocals. The Guest Judge, Ila Arun said that she just loved Ankita and worried that she may not get as many gigs now that Mishra is entering the market. Mishra landed in the bottom 2 the next day, and the judges unanimously expressed that she didn't deserve to go.
Week 7: Galas
Mishra's train came to a grinding halt as Mishra missed her tempo initially, and was left standing awkwardly behind judges, and then returning to the stage. It was easily her worst performance. Javed Akhtar and Anu Malek said that they were disappointed in her and that she really needs to work on her Vocals. Alisha Chinai praised the fact that Mishra continued her performance even after messing up the beginning and said that Mishra had garnered such a strong fanbase because of her fighting spirit. Guest Judge, Anil Kapoor and Udit Narayan also complimented her for continuing with her performance, thought Udit Narayan also mentioned that she should have sung with a little more enthusiasm because the theme was "Independence Day". At the results show, Mishra was declared to be in the Bottom 3 alongside Deepali Sahai and Emon Chatterjee. Sahai was eliminated.
Week 8: Galas
Mishra performed the hit single "Deewane" for "Pop Music Week". Javed Akhtar said that her performance was good, but with singing, there was much to be desired. Alisha Chinai said that the song choice was perfect, and that Mishra sang on-key and delivered a great performance. Anu Malek said that her singing is not improving and she needs to work very hard but her performance was outstanding. Lastly Udit Narayan told her that her performance had flashes of brilliance but overall it was just good. At the results show, Mishra was declared safe and Puja Chatterjee was eliminated leaving Mishra as the last girl standing.
Week 9: Galas
Mishra performed "Aap Jaisa Koi" for "Disco Night". Javed Akhtar told her that there is something very special about her voice and her personality. Alisha Chinai gave her a standing ovation and said that Mishra could release her version of the song and get an instant hit with it. Udit Narayan also complimented her, calling her performance and singing Earth shattering, and Anu Malek said that they all want a female Indian Idol this year, and Mishra had all the ingredients for it.
