Muriel McQueen Fergusson

Muriel McQueen Fergusson, PC, OC, QC (May 26, 1899 – April 11, 1997) was a Canadian Senator and the first woman Speaker of the Senate.

Born in Shediac, New Brunswick, she graduated from Mount Allison University in 1921 with a B.A. and studied law at Dalhousie University.[1]

Welcome to Downham Preparatory School and Montessori Nursery.

We are a co-educational independent day school for pupils aged 2-11 years. The school is non-selective, there is no entrance exam. Our aim is to help all children, regardless of academic ability, to reach their maximum potential. Schemes of work are differentiated and are written to suit the needs of each individual pupil, whether they have a special need and require additional help or are academically gifted and need more challenging programmes of study. We also believe that learning should be fun and that children should come to school looking forward to each new day.

In March 2009 the school was inspected by Ofsted and was graded as ‘Outstanding’. The report states :-

‘Downham Preparatory school and Montessori Nursery provides outstanding education and care for its pupils. Pupils flourish, are happy to be at the school and are motivated to learn.’

If you would like to visit the school, I would be very pleased to meet you and show you around.

                                         Elizabeth Laffeaty-Sharpe

She was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 1953 and was the first woman Speaker of the Senate from 1972 to 1974. She retired in 1975.[1]

In 1974, she was sworn to the Privy Council. In 1976 she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.[1]
