It is found in China, Egypt, Eritrea, French Polynesia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Thailand, Vietnam, Yemen, and possibly Djibouti. Its natural habitats are open seas, shallow seas, subtidal aquatic beds, coral reefs, estuarine waters, intertidal marshes, and coastal saline lagoons.
