as_of = July 22, 2007The FlamanvilleNuclear Power Plant is located atFlamanville, Manche ,France on theCotentin Peninsula .It houses two
pressurized water reactor s (PWRs) that produce 1300 MWe each and came into service in 1986 and 1987, respectively. It produced 18.9 TW-h in 2005, which amounted to 4% of the electricity production in France. In 2006 this figure was about 3.3%. Construction began on a new reactor Flamanville 3, on 4 December 2007 [http://www.world-nuclear-news.org/newNuclear/Construction_of_Flamanville_EPR_begins-041207.shtml] . The new unit is aAreva European Pressurized Reactor type and is planned to produce 1650 MWe from 2012 to 2072.In 2006, before the start of construction of unit 3, there were 671 workers regularly working at the two operational reactors.
Incidents
On
May 13 ,2004 an electrical defect prevented an on-time restart of Unit 2 after a scheduled refueling outage. On
January 3 ,2007 blasting of some mines for the purpose of clearing the site for the new EPR units threw some debris that hit the side of one of the existing units. The event had no effect on the schedule of the new unit or integrity of the existing unit.
