The airport was formerly named Waterloo Regional Airport but it changed its name in March 2004 after
Northwest Airlines announced that it would run daily flights toDetroit . Established by Waterloo-Wellington Airport Commission in 1948 and completed in 1950, it became ageneral aviation facility in 1969. It operates 24 hours and seven days a week.The former name, Waterloo Regional Airport, is now used by an airport in
Waterloo, Iowa .Expansion
While the airport has relatively little passenger traffic, it is the 18th busiest airport in Canada by aircraft movements (2007), and underwent a major expansion in 2003. Currently, there are three major commercial airlines serving the area:
Mesaba Airlines , aNorthwest Airlines affiliate providing service toDetroit ,Westjet toCalgary , andSkyservice , providing service toCancún ,Puerto Plata andPunta Cana . Canadian airlines have in the past offered commuter flights toOttawa andMontreal , but these services have never proved successful. The Airport Authority has been in serious talks withAir Canada over a restoration of theirOttawa andMontreal services by theirAir Canada Jazz division. Ultimate Ski Vacations has started a service to Mt. Tremblant from Waterloo International Airport in January 2007. Skiers/snowboarders are able to purchase either 3 day or 4 day ski packages. This service is conducted onVoyageur Airways Dash 7 aircraft.As of late 2005, major vacation charters (primarily to the
Caribbean ) have begun to operate during their peak season.On
January 17 ,2007 ,Westjet announced new daily seasonal flights toCalgary . This service started onMay 14 ,2007 . OnJune 27 ,2007 , WestJet announced that the flights to Calgary would go year-round.On
