History

The predecessor Chiryū Station was opened on April 1, 1923 as Shin-Chiryū Station (新知立駅 Shin-Chiryū-eki?) on the privately-owned Aichi Electric Railway Company, but soon merged with nearby Chiryū Station (知立駅 Chiryū-eki?) on the Mikawa Railway later that year. Although the station was the same, the Aichi Railway side was renamed Higashi-Chiryū Station (東知立駅 Higashi-Chiryū-eki?). The Aichi Electric Railway Company was taken over by Meitetsu on August 1, 1935 (becoming the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line, and the Mikawa Railway on June 1, 1941. A new station building was completed later the same year. The station was relocated to its present location on April 1, 1959 and named Chiryū Station, with the former Chiryū Station becoming Mikawa Chiryū Station (三河知立駅 Mikawa Chiryū-eki?).
