Redan is a census-designated place (CDP) in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 33,841.

Redan was probably named after the numerous redans built during the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War. There is also a Redan High School located here. It has also been said that Redan was named after The Redan Store, a trading stop along the railway run by a couple named Reed and Ann.

Geography

Redan is located at coor dms|33|44|21|N|84|9|57|W|city (33.739256, -84.165781)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.6 square miles (24.9 km²), of which, 9.6 square miles (24.7 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.52%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 33,841 people, 11,748 households, and 8,517 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,542.0 people per square mile (1,368.2/km²). There were 12,106 housing units at an average density of 1,267.1/sq mi (489.4/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 5.68% White, 91.27% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.78% of the population.

There were 11,748 households out of which 44.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% were married couples living together, 24.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 21.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.35.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 31.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 38.1% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 3.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 85.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $91,564, and the median income for a family is $56,021. Males have a median income of $76,115 versus $61,166 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $200,316. 5.5% of the population and 4.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
