Bipan Chandra (born 1928) is an Indian historian of Modern India, specialising in economic and political history.

Biography

Chandra was born in Kangra Valley, Himachal Pradesh. His original name was Bipan Chandra Sud, but he decided to exclude his caste name 'Sud' from his said name, in order to uphold his ideologies based on egalitarianism. Incidentally, Chandra married into a prominent Sud family.

Work

He was educated at Forman Christian College, Lahore, Stanford University, USA and the University of Delhi, where he completed his Ph.D.

He taught for many years at Hindu College, Delhi. He was the UGC National Lecturer in 1973-74. He was a Reader at Delhi University, Delhi, and was the Professor of History at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, where he is presently an Emeritus Professor. He is the Chairman of the National Book Trust, New Delhi [http://www.nbtindia.org.in/download/speech%20Prof%20Chandra_engl_final.pdf Bipan Chandra's speech at Frankfurt] ] He was also a Member of the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. He was a member of the editorial board of the journal "Enquiry".

He has delivered several chaired lectures such as Kosambi Memorial Lecture, K.P.Jayswant Memorial Lecture, V.D.Mahajan Memorial Lecture, Heras Memorial Lecture, and the inaugural lecture of the first EMS Namboodiripad Memorial Seminar.

He has been at the forefront of the anti-communal struggle in India since independence. It is pertinent to point out here that Chandra never occupied any official post in the ICHR, and is known both nationally and internationally as a writer and teacher more than an administrator. Generations of students of both Hindu College, Delhi and JNU have been his students, and remain indebted to him for his insight and scholarship.
