ceremonial county ofCounty Durham ,England . It is situated a few miles west ofDarlington . It is built on the site of a Roman fort of AD 260-270, which was built at the point whereDere Street crossed theRiver Tees . The settlement has been in continuous use thereafter.The remains of the Roman fort are open to the public and the remains of the Roman bridge over the Tees lie around 100 yards south of the current course of the river.
