The Houston Intermodal Transit Center is proposed to be a hub for local, commuter, and intercity transit in
Houston, Texas . The center will replace the HoustonAmtrak station, as well as various bus terminals throughout the city.Design
The current plan for the structure will be a modern glass and steel building surrounding a "great space". Because the facility will be built over the tracks, one of the dominant features will be a grand staircase. The center will consist of a multi-level station with
heavy rail (commuter, Amtrak, Union Pacific freight) running under a large public space withlight rail running via an elevated structure. Main street will be split into upper Main street which will access the station at the level of the public space in a loop, and lower Main street which will go underneath the entire station and continue on as North Main street.Judge Hernandez Tunnel
The Judge Hernandez Tunnel, which currently travels under the rail yard where the station will be built, will be rebuilt to carry Main street under the entire complex. Fact|date=March 2008
Land acquisition
As of May 2007, METRO has authorized the negotiations for acquiring the first convert|9|acre|m2 of land in the vicinity of Burnett and Main Street for the Intermodal transit facility. Fact|date=September 2007
