Cartago Canton

Cartago is the name of the first canton in the province of Cartago in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 287.77 km² [Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), 2001.] , and has a population of 140,686 [Estimates of Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC), May 2003.] . The city of Cartago is the capital city of the canton, and although, the provincial capital of province of Cartago.

Cartago is a T-shaped canton stretching southeast from its capital city to encompass a thin swatch of the Cordillera de Talamanca (Talamanca Mountain Range), and including portions of the Interamericana (Pan-American Highway).

The canton of Cartago is subdivided into 11 distritos (districts).

Cartago was first mentioned as a canton in a decree dated December 7, 1848.
