Situated in theAndes mountains 40 km south ofQuito ,Ecuador , it is overshadowed by its famous neighbourCotopaxi .The volcano is named after Rumiñahui, who was an Inca general at the time of the Spanish conquest of the
Inca Empire .The canton of Rumiñahui in the Ecuadorian province of Pichincha was named after the volcano.
