Interstate 29 passes through the Omaha-Council Bluffs and the Sioux City areas. Interstate 29 follows a corridor that is generally within 5 miles of theMissouri River throughout Iowa. Between Council Bluffs and Sioux City, I-29 replacedU.S. Route 75 as the major route in western Iowa. US 75 has since been relocated, south of Sioux City, intoNebraska .Route description
Interstate 29 enters Iowa near Hamburg and intersects
Iowa Highway 333 , which links I-29 withU.S. Route 275 . Traveling to the northwest, it intersectsIowa Highway 2 and then turns north. Near Pacific Junction and Glenwood, I-29 overlaps withU.S. Route 34 . North of Glenwood, I-29 andU.S. Route 275 run concurrently towards Council Bluffs. AtIowa Highway 92 , the US 275 concurrency ends. Just north of that interchange, I-29 and Interstate 80 overlap through the southern portion of Council Bluffs. North of the split from I-80, I-29 meets Interstate 480/U.S. Route 6 in western Council Bluffs, where I-480 ends.Interstate 29 travels north from Council Bluffs and meets Interstate 680 with which it overlaps for 9 miles between Crescent and Loveland. I-680 is a cut-off route for Des Moines-to-Sioux City travelers. I-29 meets
U.S. Route 30 at Missouri Valley andIowa Highway 175 at Onawa. At Sergeant Bluff, I-29 intersects what was calledIowa Highway 378 , which connected I-29 to theSioux Gateway Airport . AtSioux City , I-29 meetsU.S. Route 20 /U.S. Route 75 , which is also the eastern terminus ofInterstate 129 . Closer to downtown Sioux City, I-29 meets the end ofU.S. Route 77 , which barely entersIowa . Just north of theIowa Highway 12 interchange is theSouth Dakota border at theBig Sioux River .Exit list
