next_route=30In the U.S. state of Iowa, Interstate 29 is a north-south interstate highway traversing closely parallel to the Nebraska state line. Interstate 29 passes through the Omaha-Council Bluffs and the Sioux City areas. Interstate 29 follows a corridor that is generally within 5 miles of the Missouri River throughout Iowa. Between Council Bluffs and Sioux City, I-29 replaced U.S. Route 75 as the major route in western Iowa. US 75 has since been relocated, south of Sioux City, into Nebraska.

Route description

Interstate 29 enters Iowa near Hamburg and intersects Iowa Highway 333, which links I-29 with U.S. Route 275. Traveling to the northwest, it intersects Iowa Highway 2 and then turns north. Near Pacific Junction and Glenwood, I-29 overlaps with U.S. Route 34. North of Glenwood, I-29 and U.S. Route 275 run concurrently towards Council Bluffs. At Iowa Highway 92, the US 275 concurrency ends. Just north of that interchange, I-29 and Interstate 80 overlap through the southern portion of Council Bluffs. North of the split from I-80, I-29 meets Interstate 480/U.S. Route 6 in western Council Bluffs, where I-480 ends.

Interstate 29 travels north from Council Bluffs and meets Interstate 680 with which it overlaps for 9 miles between Crescent and Loveland. I-680 is a cut-off route for Des Moines-to-Sioux City travelers. I-29 meets U.S. Route 30 at Missouri Valley and Iowa Highway 175 at Onawa. At Sergeant Bluff, I-29 intersects what was called Iowa Highway 378, which connected I-29 to the Sioux Gateway Airport. At Sioux City, I-29 meets U.S. Route 20/U.S. Route 75, which is also the eastern terminus of Interstate 129. Closer to downtown Sioux City, I-29 meets the end of U.S. Route 77, which barely enters Iowa. Just north of the Iowa Highway 12 interchange is the South Dakota border at the Big Sioux River.
