genus ofcatfish (order Siluriformes) of the familyLoricariidae . It includes fourspecies , "S. caquetae", "S. citurensis", "S. leightoni", and "S. tamanae".cite journal|url=http://silurus.acnatsci.org/ACSI/library/biblios/2007_Ferraris_Catfish_Checklist.pdf|title=Checklist of catfishes, recent and fossil (Osteichthyes: Siluriformes), and catalogue of siluriform primary types|first=Carl J., Jr.|last=Ferraris|journal=Zootaxa |volume=1418|pages=1–628|year=2007|format=PDF ]Distribution and habitat
The genus "Sturisomatichthys" is distributed in the northwestern part of
South America , on thePacific andAtlantic slopes of theAndes . The species appear to occupy the same ecological niche as those in "Sturisoma ". "S. caquetae" originates from theCaquetá River basin.FishBase species|genus=Sturisomatichthys|species=caquetae|year=2007|month=July] "S. citurensis" inhabits Tuira andBayano River basins, and is the only species fromPanama .FishBase species|genus=Sturisomatichthys|species=citurensis|year=2007|month=July] "S. leightoni" is from the Upper Magdalena andCauca River basins.FishBase species|genus=Sturisomatichthys|species=leightoni|year=2007|month=July] "S. tamanae" is found in the San Juan River basin ofColombia .FishBase species|genus=Sturisomatichthys|species=tamanae|year=2007|month=July]Description
Sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology of "Sturisomatichthys" similar to "Sturisoma ". "Sturisomatichthys" is distinguished from "Sturisoma" primarily by the absence of arostrum . Only one species, "S. citurensis", from Panama, seems to be significantly different from all congeneric species in having an abdominal plate cover consisting of small platelets without any particular organization. Other species may represent a species complex with a short snout as in the genus "Farlowella " with reference to the representatives of the "F. curtirostra" group. The weakness of this diagnostic feature could lead to the synonymy of "Sturisomatichthys" with "Sturisoma".cite journal|url=http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/2007f/zt01462p040.pdf|title=The genera of the Neotropical armored catfish subfamily Loricariinae (Siluriformes: Loricariidae): a practical key and synopsis|first=Raphael|last=Covain|coauthors=Fisch-Muller, Sonia|journal=Zootaxa |volume=1462|pages=1–40|year=2007|format=PDF ] "Sturisomatichthys" species grow to about 18–25centimetre s (7.1–9.8 in) in length.References
