Pakuranga (New Zealand electorate)

Pakuranga (New Zealand electorate)

Pakuranga is a New Zealand Parliamentary electorate.

It is currently held by Maurice Williamson MP [ [http://www.parliament.nz/en-NZ/MPP/MPs/MPs/e/1/5/48MP13031-Williamson-Maurice.htm New Zealand Parliament - Maurice Williamson MP] ] .

Population Centres

Pakuranga is one of sixty-three general electorates used in New Zealand general elections. It covers the population centres of Pakuranga, Farm Cove, Half Moon Bay, Bucklands Beach, parts of Highland Park and parts of Howick.

History

Pakuranga was created as an electorate in 1963. With the introduction of MMP in 1996 the seat was expanded to absorb the former separate seat of Howick, as population quotas for all electorates were increased to allow for list representation.

Due to changes in population, the Electoral Commission proposed that the boundaries for Pakuranga be changed in the 2008 general election. The draft report called for the transfer in of the population centres of Panmure, Point England and Glen Innes. Highland Park, Howick and parts of Bucklands Beach would have been carved off into a separate seat bearing the resurrected name Howick , which would also have picked up Botany Downs from the seat of Clevedon. This change was strongly opposed by Pakuranga residents, with the Commission receiving the most number of objections relating to a single electorate.

After the objection and counter-objection process, the Commission adopted the recommendation of Objector N17/030 (N17 being the designation given to the Pakuranga seat) by keeping the western boundary of Pakuranga at the Tamaki River. To make the necessary population adjustments, the Commission detached Cockle Bay and Burswood. The proposed new seat of Howick was, also on the recommendation of Objector N17/30, renamed Botany to reflect the electorate's centre on the growing population of Flat Bush and Botany Downs-Dannemora.

Pakuranga is regarded as a safe National seat, and has been held by Maurice Williamson since 1987.
