Regular season: End Of An Era

As 1980 approached so did an end to an era. All signs pointed to Fred Lynn and Rick Burleson and possibly Carlton Fisk going elsewhere, and Don Zimmer's job was on the line as well. In 1980 Boston dropped to fourth, 20 games back of the New York Yankees, who won the AL East. Zimmer was let go with four games left, and Johnny Pesky finished.

Lynn hit .301, had 12 homers and 61 RBIs. Jim Rice hit .294, with 24 HRs and 86 RBIs. Mike Torrez was 9-16, and Dennis Eckersley 12-14. Lynn, Fisk and Burleson soon would be gone, and Mrs. Yawkey was about to assert herself for the Red Sox of the Eighties.
