Ulting

Ulting

Ulting is a small village located in the remote countryside of the county of Essex, UK. It shares its borders with Langford and Nounsley, and is part of Maldon. The village committee recently rejected a plan to build a business park in the area, a move with mixed opinions within the community. The parish councillers of Ulting are Katherine Palmer and Andrew Tween, after the retirement of Antonia Nelson, Alan Robinson and Caroline Spong in May 2007.

History

Ulting was the location of the first sugar beet factory in England, although its useful life was cut short by cheap imports of cane sugar.

Village Fête

A highlight of the Ulting calendar is the Summer Fayre, which takes place every 3 years and attracts many locals and outsiders. Traditional stalls are set up, including a tombola, white elephant stall, ice-cream and tea stall, book stall, tractor rides, hoop-la, coconut shy, electric-wire-steadiness stall, rat whacking, a trampoline, and car display, amongst many others. Funds are raised for the Ulting Village Church, where the event has been held in the past. The last Ulting Village Fête was in Summer 2006.

Church

The village church is has been standing since 1150, with a major restoration taking place in the 1870s. The church was once a place of pilgrimage ranking with Walshingham and other famous shrines. The river Chelmer runs next to the church and through Ulting, and is used by Cardfields Farm for canoing activities.

Locals' activities include fishing, going to church, taking walks, horse riding and shooting. The phrase "Doe's of Ulting" refers to the large local centre for outdoor machinery. Recent community problems within the area include missing roadsigns.

Notable Residents
