Swinburne Residential College was constructed in 1997 and can accommodate 84 students. Residents are generally rural and international students. The residents are generally students at Swinburne either studying at TAFE or University at one of the many campus' in the Melbourne area.

Location

Located at 21 Wakefield St Hawthorn, the Swinburne Residential College, is in the heart of Swinburne University Hawthorn campus, a short walk from Glenferrie railway station, Melbourne, Safeway, and McDonalds.An average walk to the college from Flinders St Station takes around 70 minutes, and is also accessible via the number 16 tram line.

Features

The college is a multi-level building with student rooms starting on level 2 and ending on level 5 (the top level). Each level contains communal toilets, male and female respectively, level 2 also accommodates a disabled bathroom. Each floor can accommodate 21 residents, which are all accessible via lift or staircase. Levels 2 and 4 contain meeting rooms for study and the like, and levels 1, 3 and 5 contain television rooms, level 1's TV area is the most commonly used area with Foxtel equipt to that television, most channels are accessible, level 3 boasts a DVD player and level 5 has a VCR. A continental breakfast is provided daily, and cooking facilities consist of a shared kitchen with three fridges, two ovens, three cook tops, two microwaves, and a toaster. Washing facilities include two washers and two dryers, with the availability of a clothesline in the court yard. Residents are able to access a pool table, arcade machine, and vending machine.

Events and activities

* O Week – Officially known as orientation week, the college organises many activities, including a meet and greet wine and cheese night where all the new residents were able to meet and interact for the first time. Trivia night and theme party night are two of the many other events the college holds during the week, prizes can be won, most likely free drinks.
* Movie and Pizza night – Residents are supplied with free pizza and collectively watch a new release movie, in 2007 the movie was "Casino Royale" with "Happy Feet" and "Kenny" as backups.
* Pool competition – Where residents can compete against each other for a prize, 2007's winner was Lachlan Ryan.
* Combined college and apartment function – A function where the residents from the college and apartments are able to mingle with drinks, finger food and music. In 2007 it was a beach theme.
* International Night – One of the college's most important nights where residents are able to dress in the cultural garments of different nations, this is where the college photo is taken each year, prizes are given out to the best dressed residents. There are also different foods served on the night which are made by the residents which range dramatically.
* College Ball – Held in September this, along with the International Night, is one of the colleges most important social events.

Trivia

* Gettin Your 40 On is a new tradition started in 2007, which involve taping 2 long neck alcohol bottles to your hands and not taking them off until both are empty.
* On wine and cheese night each resident is given a name tag to write on, but be wary of what you write because that name may stick with you for the rest of your life, example of this include "A-Train", "Shep", "Sven" and "Mudd"
* Nicknames also derive from residents home towns, examples: "Shep", "Tas", "Colac" and "British"
* It is common on a Thursday night for residents to get intoxicated at the local pubs
* McDonalds runs are very common due to intoxication and proximity on a Thursday night
* In the months of June and November the college holds alcohol bans in the building, this is stressed because these are exam periods, it is suggested that if one were to drink alcohol that they do it off site.
