Communist-labelled States
Communism is an ideological socio-economic construct with widely varying implementations among states and political parties in modern day, and accordingly there are strongly politicized views on the degree to which such states adhere to such an ideal.
The following countries are one-party states in which the ruling party has declared official allegiances to Marxism-Leninism and that are widely viewed as Communist states by western governments (ruling parties also denoted):
* (since 1948); Korean Workers' Party (Note: Marxist-Leninism was replaced with Juche in 1992 as the official state ideology)

* Republic of Cuba (Cuban Revolution in 1959, socialist state declared in 1961); Communist Party of Cuba
* (since 1975); Lao People's Revolutionary Party
* Socialist Republic of Vietnam (since 1976); Communist Party of Vietnam.
Communist Governments
In addition to Communist states, there are other multi-party democracies that currently have elected Communist governments. Such states are not considered to be "Communist states" because the communist articles of the party are not embedded within the constitution of the state itself.

States Undergoing Significant Market Reforms
These countries continue to profess Marxism-Leninism as official state ideologies but have undertaken significant free market reforms since the early 1990's and undergone significant economic growth, seen to be initiatives largely in opposition to the Communist philosophy. In Cuba, with the handover of power from Fidel Castro to Raúl Castro, the latter released an official memo, promising to lift the ban on purchases of computers, DVD players, and microwaves, but at this time, there have not yet been very significant market reforms.
