The new regiment was mustered into Federal service at Pontiac, Michigan, on August 29, 1862. Among its ranks was Henry W. Howgate, who after the war became a controversial figure as the Chief Disbursing Officer for the United States Army Signal Corps in charge of Arctic explorations.cite news |first=Kenn |last=Harper |authorlink= |coauthors= |title=Henry Howgate |url=http://www.nunatsiaqnews.com/archives/2007/710/71026/opinionEditorial/columns.html |work= |publisher=Nunatsiaq News |date=October, 2007 |accessdate=2008-04-14]

In September 1862, Wisner was stricken with typhoid fever while en route to the regiment's deployment and died in Kentucky. [ [http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mi/county/tuscola/book/book141-146.htm Biographical Portraits] ]
