Gainesville is a town in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 220.

Geography

Gainesville is located at coor dms|32|49|2|N|88|9|29|W|city (32.817317, -88.158026)GR|1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 220 people, 87 households, and 58 families residing in the town. The population density was 128.3 people per square mile (49.7/km²). There were 122 housing units at an average density of 71.1/sq mi (27.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 22.73% White and 77.27% Black or African American.

There were 87 households out of which 29.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.0% were married couples living together, 32.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.28.

In the town the population was spread out with 32.3% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 14.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $10,938, and the median income for a family was $13,750. Males had a median income of $25,625 versus $15,625 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,176. About 60.4% of families and 70.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 82.6% of those under the age of eighteen and 48.3% of those sixty five or over.
