CR 620 CR 624

Middlesex County Route 622 (abbreviated CR 622) is a county highway in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It traverses the municipalities of Highland Park, Piscataway and Middlesex in its 7.44 mile (11.97 km) length.[2] The road began as Middlesex County Route 2R8 circa 1947.[citation needed] The road was changed into County Route 514 Spur, a spur route of the recently created County Route 514. At an unknown date, CR 514 Spur was demoted to Middlesex County Route 622.

Route description

County Route 622 (River Road) begins at a traffic light with Route 27/County Route 514 and a local street named Lincoln Avenue in Highland Park.[2] The road begins as a two-lane local road, passing some local roads in Highland Park and soon enters a tunnel under the Pennsylvania Railroad. A dead end street leaves to the right immediately after the tunnel. At six-tenths of a mile, CR 622 comes upon a traffic light with two county routes. The one to the left, CR 807 (Johnson Drive), takes you through Johnson County Park. The one on the right, CR 692 (Cedar Lane), takes you through the outskirts of Highland Park. The road continues, weaving left and right and paralleling Johnson County Park and CR 807 to the left. At 1.53 miles (2.46 km), CR 622 meets up the northern terminus of CR 807, which is now known as Violet Drive.[3]

County Route 622 and New Jersey Route 18 in Piscataway

At 1.62 miles (2.61 km), the interchange for NJ 18 begins with an exit for 18 North.[2] The road then overlaps CR 609, which was concurrent with NJ 18. During this short concurrency, to the left is the interchange for Route 18 south and soon after the road to the Cornelius Low House to the right. At 1.87 miles (3.01 km), CR 609 (known as Landing Lane) leaves to the left and CR 622 continues on, paralleling Johnson Park still.[2] At 2.31 miles (3.72 km), a road for Rutgers University, Stuphen Road, leaves to the right. At this point, CR 622 is still a two-lane road, one lane on each side. At 2.76 miles (4.44 km), Johnson Drive comes in from the left and Hoes Lane West comes in from the right. The road passes an entrance ramp for a Colgate Palmolive plant and then enters the River Road Historic District. At 4.75 miles (7.64 km), CR 622 comes upon an intersection with Plainfield Avenue and then Centennial Avenue soon afterwards. After leaving Centennial Avenue, CR 622 comes upon an interchange with Interstate 287.[2]

County Route 622 continues through the outskirts of Piscataway, passing a few entrances to a plant at 6.27, 6.32 and 6.46 miles (10.40 km).[2] After passing the plant, CR 622 enters the town of Middlesex at 6.49 miles (10.44 km). At 6.97 miles (11.22 km), CR 622 and CR 607 meet and the two merge together. The concurrency only lasts for about seven-hundredths of a mile, where CR 622 turns right and ends at Route 28, 7.44 miles (11.97 km) from Highland Park and NJ 27.[2]

History

County Route 622 is the current designation for River Road. Over the years, it has gone through different route numbers. Around the year 1947, the NJDOT map showed the road under the designation County Route 2R8 . When state routes were assigned in 1927, the whole stretch of County Route 622 was known as New Jersey Route S-28 (now part of NJ 18). From 1953 to 2000, the road was designated as a county maintained route known as County Route 514 Spur.[4][5] In the renumbering of 2000, 514 SPUR was demoted to Middlesex County Route 622.[1]
