- Arthur Looss
Arthur Looss was a German zoologist and parasitologist. Looss was born in 1861 in
Chemnitz , and was educated both there and inŁódź ,Poland cite journal |quotes=no |author=M. P. Thereafter, he studied at theUniversity of Leipzig , where he received adoctorate for his study oftrematode s.Looss was sent by
Rudolf Leuckart toEgypt to study the transmission ofbilharzia , where he became accidentally infected withhookworm , and in so doing discovered the method by which thelarva e penetrate the skin. He spilt some larval culture onto his hand in 1896, while dropping it into the mouths ofguinea pig s; observing the irritation this caused to his skin, he hypothesised that infection pass through the skin. He examined his faeces at intervals and found hookworm eggs in it a few weeks later. The paper he wrote about thelife cycle of the hookworm is considered a classic in the field [cite web |url=http://www.stanford.edu/class/humbio103/ParaSites2002/cutaneous_larva_migrans/history%20of%20discovery.html |title=History of Discovery |publisher=Stanford University |accessdate=2007-06-14] . He later described the species as "Ancylostoma duodenale" [cite journal |url=http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,715938-2,00.html |title=Milestones: Monday, Jun. 25, 1923 |journal=Time] .Looss continued to work as a professor of parasitology and biology in Egypt until the outbreak of the First World War. It is reported that "Looss' enthusiasm and energy as a research worker have probably seldom been surpassed, and all his work was characterized by a painstaking attention to detail that is unfortunately rare" [cite journal |quotes=no |url=http://www.ajtmh.org/cgi/content/abstract/41/3_Part_2/18 |title=Larva Migrans then |author=Lawrence R.
