In
1853 the State of Maryland chartered theBaltimore and Potomac Rail Road Company to construct arailroad from the City of Baltimore via Upper Marlboro and Port Tobacco to a point on the Potomac River betweenLiverpool Point and the St. Marys River, and any branches of at most 20 miles (32 km) in length. This rail line, now operated byCSX Transportation , is known as the "Pope's Creek Branch" and carried passenger service until1949 . Today it is primarily used to haulcoal to the power plant.
