The
USS Black Hawk (AD-9) was launched in1913 asSS Santa Catalina byWilliam Cramp and Sons Ship and Engine Building Co.,Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ; purchased by theU.S. Navy 3 December 1917 ; and commissioned15 May 1918 , Commander R. C. Bulmer in command.Post-World War I North Atlantic operations
Assigned as tender and
flagship to the Mine Force, USS Black Hawk departed Boston in June1918 to take station atInverness ,Scotland . She remained there until the end ofWorld War I and then shifted her base toKirkwall ,Orkney Islands , for the North Sea mine sweep. She returned toNew York in November1919 and served asflagship and tender for the Atlantic Fleetdestroyers in reserve at Philadelphia. After the installation of atorpedo workshop and other equipment she was designated adestroyer tender (AD-9) in November1920 and reported asflagship of the Operative Squadron,Destroyer Flotillas, Atlantic Fleet. She served mainly inCaribbean andPanamanian waters until June1922 when she leftNewport, Rhode Island , via theSuez Canal , for the Asiatic Squadron. USS Black Hawk remained in the Far East for 20 years during which she tended Destroyer Squadrons 5 (1922-40) and 29 (1940 -42).Pacific Ocean operations
On
7 December 1941 USS Black Hawk was atBalikpagan ,Borneo . She operated as a tender and repair ship atJava until31 December 1941 ;Darwin, Australia (January-3 February 1942 );Java (3-20 February ); and inAustralian waters (26 February -29 May ). LeavingAustralia she steamed toPearl Harbor , arriving15 June 1942 . She was assigned tender duty inAlaskan waters and arrived atKodiak 29 July 1942 . Remaining there until4 November 1942 she then returned toSan Francisco, California , for repairs and overhaul.Completing her overhaul
16 March 1943 , USS Black Hawk returned toAlaskan waters, arriving10 April 1943 . Except for a short stay atPearl Harbor (30 September 1943-1 February 1944 ), she remained atAdak until21 March 1945 . Following repairs atAlameda, California , she arrived atPearl Harbor 30 May 1945 ; remained there until11 September ; and then proceeded toOkinawa . USS Black Hawk served in the Far East tending vessels atOkinawa and inChina until20 May 1946 when she headed home for the last time.Decommissioned
15 August 1946 , she was transferred toMaritime Commission 4 September 1947 . USS Black Hawk received onebattle star for her service inWorld War II .References
