Background

St. Anthony Catholic High School was founded in 1903 by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate as a junior seminary. In 1995, the University of the Incarnate Word assumed management of St. Anthony and formed St. Anthony Catholic High School for boys; from this point on, the school would no longer remain a seminary. In 2003, the school was opened to young women as well.

St. Anthony Catholic High School focuses on an integrated curriculum of academics, athletics, Christian services, community activities and spirituality, with the goal of preparing graduates for a life of Christian service.

St. Anthony Catholic High School offers a boarding program for students in grades 9-12. Ninety percent of boarding students are foreign students from countries such as China, Taiwan, Korea, Spain, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Japan and Canada, while the remaining ten percent of boarders are non-San Antonio residents. Academics

St. Anthony Catholic High School is a college-preparatory high school. All students are required to complete 27 credit hours to graduate. The requirements are English, religion, mathematics, science, foreign language, physical education, social studies, fine arts and technology.

Eligible juniors and seniors have an opportunity for dual enrollment at St. Anthony Catholic High School and the University of the Incarnate Word through a program called Senior Connection. These students can earn up to 18 transferable college semester hours while at the same time satisfying all high school graduation requirements.

Tutoring is available free of charge through the University of the Incarnate Word's Learning Assistance Center.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

For students whose native language is not English, they will be required to take the TOEFLwhat and be assessed on their proficiency in English. If they score below a 450 on the TOEFL, they will automatically be enrolled in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program under the direction of the ELS Center. Dependent on the level of their language skills, the student will be placed in a beginning, intermediate or advanced ESL class. Students begin accruing high school credits when they have acquired sufficient English to be enrolled in the intermediate level.

Students whose English proficiency is assessed above 450 on the TOEFL will be directly admitted to the regular high school academic program. Students with limited English proficiency often need summer school or an additional year to graduate.
