19 April 1892 , –15 May 1977 ), was a Britishfilm producer and director. He was born in Cork,Ireland but went to school inBrighton . DuringWorld War I , he served in theRoyal Flying Corps . He joined the movie business in 1919 and he formed a company withJack Graham Cutts in 1920. He set up theBritish National Company , which was later absorbed intoBritish International Pictures . He also set up a 'British Hollywood' in theElstree Studios . Although,Alfred Hitchcock 's "Blackmail" is generally regarded as the first film with sound, Wilcox's "Black Waters " was trade-shown several weeks earlier. He produced more than a hundred films and directed about half of these.He married Maude Bower, with whom he had four children, and British
film actress Anna Neagle on9 August 1943 . He was never able to repeat his pre-war success and was declared bankrupt in 1964. Prior to his death inLondon ,England after a long illness, he donated four National Film Awards to the Glebelands Retirement Home in Wokingham.In 1937, he won the
