The Green Bay Police Department is tasked with law enforcement in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States. The Green Bay Police Department provides many specialized services such as a Dive Team, Harbor Patrol, Motorcycle Patrol, and a S.W.A.T. Team. The Green Bay police department was established in on August 27, 1857, when the Green Bay Police Corps was established and Henry Baird was named Chief of Police.
Controversies
April 21, 2007 — Ben Sonnenberg, 25, was shot and killed by Green Bay police officers at 2 a.m. after a traffic stop outside Club 720 on Bodart Street. He most recently worked as a driver for Yellow Cab. He and his girlfriend, Shawna Schommer, were expecting a child.A bystander inside the Cesar J. Grijalva-Ortiz, 31 — also was shot and was taken to St. Vincent Hospital. The incident began at 1:56 a.m. when police were called to a disturbance involving a suspect with a baseball bat in the parking lot of a tavern in the 1600 block of Main Street. During the Sonnenberg shooting, four police officers fired 32 bullets, 11 hitting unarmed Sonnenberg and killing him. Attorneys for Sonnenberg's family and a bystander shot by officers during the same incident have filed claims to sue the city of Green Bay.
