As such it has no political or administrative significance, but is a geographical and statistical entity. It is not the same as Metropolitan Malmö (Swedish: Stormalmö), which is a much larger area.
It is a bimunicipal locality in Skåne County. The population (as of 2005) is 258,020.
The municipal seats of Malmö Municipality (Malmö) and Burlöv Municipality (Arlöv) are located here.
