History

While working on an anime style comedy series called "Farewell, Manga Squad", Bob Cesca and John Christian Plummer developed the idea of "Kung Fu Jimmy Chow" as another series that would both parody and salute anime. The impetus behind the series was to have a kid who was a kung fu master, Jimmy Chow, named in homage to film director, Stephen Chow. The idea developed to have Chow travelling across the United States, much like David Banner of "The Incredible Hulk", in search of the Purple Lady, a villainous ninja who killed Chow's master. To finance his travels, Chow takes mall jobs and it is while working at these malls that Chow is ambushed by Purple Ninjas in the employ of the Purple Lady, shapely fangirls, and various other obstacles.

Cesca and Plummer had been working with Heavy.com on projects such as "Superficial Friends" and Heavy wanted to produce "Jimmy Chow" with high production values in a way that would appeal to both an anime audience and a wider crowd. The mall culture and pop references were seen as being very strong and Heavy commissioned a pilot and ten episodes of the series which started showing in April 2007.

Although only the pilot was done by [http://www.bishopanimation.com Bishop Animation] , the subsequent episodes use many of the assets created by Bishop Animation. They have not worked on any episodes after the pilot.

Opening song

The theme song for the opening sequence tells the backstory behind Jimmy Chow's mission to find the Purple Lady. Cesca wrote nonsense lyrics which he passed on to musician Billy Sherwood. Sherwood had the lyrics translated into Japanese by his in-laws and the finished song set the tone for the whole show. With English subtitles the opening sequence gives the show the appearance of being an actual Japanese anime that has merely been dubbed.Quote|Sexy girls observe the boy riding fast! Characters

Jimmy Chow

Kung Fu Master who kills all the purple ninjas and gets all the cute fan girls. He has amazing Kung Fu skills and often declares various things to have "Happy Awesome Power!"

Purple Lady

Jimmy Chow's nemesis. She killed Jimmy's Kung Fu master to become Jimmy's new master, but since he refused, she's now out to kill him. She has a seemingly endless horde of Purple Ninjas that worship her and do her bidding.

Rainbow Ren

A teenage girl that follows Jimmy Chow around for her "very serious investigative blog 'Over the Rainbow'". She is believed to be Jimmy Chow's love interest, despite a brief lesbian relationship with Yuu Fat.

The little boy

During each episode, a little boy wearing a coloured panda suit briefly appears and utters an unusual phrase. During episode 5 it is revealed that this boy is the reincarnated Ch'i of Chow's murdered master.

Master Joon Ree

An accomplice/master of the Purple Lady who demonstrates amazing abilities despite having only one arm.

Yuu Fat

Rainbow Ren's lesbian lover for a brief period. She intimidated Ren to be her girlfriend, but when Yuu Fat said that she hates Jimmy Chow, Ren broke up with her.

The Purple Ninjas

The Purple Lady's loyal henchmen. A large horde of lookalike ninjas that swarm to kill Jimmy Chow and spout one-liners. They sometimes call each other by their first names to criticize each other. Usually, they are killed in gruesome, bloody ways by Jimmy Chow, the Purple Lady, and each other.

The Fangirls

Three fangirls follow Jimmy Chow around everywhere, cheer for him, and bug him to do things for them, like sign plasma TVs with a giant pencil, or watch them model underwear. In episode 6, they are killed when a giant mecha stomps on them, but they return a few episodes later.

The Monkey

The monkey is another servant of the Purple Lady. He usually tries to "utterly bite" Jimmy Chow's head. In some episodes he accidentally gives away the Purple Ninjas ambushes.

Master Chen

Jimmy Chow's sensei. He is killed by the Purple Lady just after declaring JC a Kung Fu Master. Thus far he appears only in Episode 5 but is mentioned frequently.

Evil Jimmy Chow

An evil twin of Jimmy Chow introduced in Episode 12 whose origin is currently unknown. He appears and sounds like Jimmy Chow, except he wears an eye patch and a guard on his forearm. He is the apprentice of the Purple Lady.

ynopsis

The pilot episode sees Chow working at the "Freezing Rock" Ice Creamery, serving ice cream to a line of infatuated girls. A Purple Ninja emerges from one of the ice cream buckets and two more emerge from the bathroom carrying a small monkey. The monkey attacks Chow and starts biting his head. Chow leaps onto a spinning ceiling fan, the motion of which causes the monkey to vomit over the girls before letting go of Chow. A horde of ninjas emerge from the ice cream buckets and one administers the "Purple Nurple" attack on Chow, tweaking his nipple painfully. Chow is able to reach an ice cream spoon and cuts the ninjas into pieces with it. Chow vows that the Purple Lady will die and the scene shifts to the monkey climbing to the roof of the ice-creamery, joining the Purple Lady who then launches into the air.
