Politics of French Guiana

Guiana is not a separate territory but both an overseas Région and overseas department of France, with the same government institutions as areas on the French mainland.

The administrative centre is Cayenne.

France is represented by prefect Jean-Pierre Laflaquière, but the President of the general council is Alain Tien-Liong and the President of the regional council is Antoine Karam.

The general council is composed of 19 seats; whose members are elected by popular vote to serve six-year terms.
