World War II . He was the seventhhead coach of the football, basketball and baseball teams at East Carolina Teachers College. He also was theAthletic Director for all sports teams. Before coaching, Johnson was a 16 letter varsity athlete between 1933 to 1937. Johnson was inducted in 1978 into the ECU Hall of Fame. The Oyster Bowl 12th Man Tackle
In October 1977, William & Mary played heavily favored East Carolina University in the Oyster Bowl.
During the last few seconds of the game, with ECU ahead by three points, William & Mary's
running back , Tom Rozantz, was charging towards atouchdown .Out of the blue, a 65-year-old man wearing a raincoat ran from the sidelines and threw a block tackle on Rozantz before he could score the winning touchdown. That man was Jim Johnson.
The yelling and screaming by William & Mary fans stopped to a weary silence. No one seemed to know what happened as the officials hunkered down into a huddle. After what seemed to be an hour, one official raised his hands with a touchdown signal. William & Mary won the game.
Jim Johnson was a talented athlete and coach at East Carolina who helped establish the Pirate Club, became a great educator, and will always be remembered for his famous “12th man” tackle in the 1977 Oyster Bowl. He made a final appearance at this tournament in July 2004 before his death on November 27, 2004.
