USS "PC-1264" was from
1944 until its decommissioning in1948 a 280-ton United States Navy "PC-461"-classsubmarine chaser . Built at Morris Heights,New York , she was commissioned in April 1944, and was notable as one of only twoWorld War II Navy ships assigned a largelyAfrican American enlisted complement. The other ship was thedestroyer escort , USS "Mason" (DE-529).Decommissioned following the war, she was transferred to the
Maritime Commission for final disposition in March 1948. "PC-1264" was the first sailing assignment of futureAdmiral Samuel Gravely , the first African American to attain that rank.She is still in existence in disrepair at an abandoned boatyard in New York.
