He is also the father of Rabbi Jacob J. Schacter, the former director of the Soloveitchik Institute.

He graduated Yeshiva University in 1938 and Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary in 1941.

During World War II, he was a chaplain in the Third Army's VIII Corps. He went on to run the Mosholu Jewish Center for more than 5 decades.
